The Goddess Nike
The most famous work is the Winged Victory of Samothrace, or the famous statue of Nike, the goddess of victory, speed, and ability, and a symbol of success in war, art, and sports. It is the servant and companion of Zeus and Athena, who gained this position of honor after the war of the Titans and, as an inspiring force, guided humans to victory and success.
This statue is about 2,200 years old and is currently kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris and is carved entirely from Parian Marble; a very white and soft marble from the Greek island of Paros, which was the most famous stone for sculpture in ancient times.
This fine-grained marble with a low level of transparency gives the statue a lively appearance when light passes through it; for this reason, works like Nike still seem full of energy and movement even after two thousand years. The hardness and at the same time the ability to carve the top of the stone allowed the sculptor to create the details of the wings and the folds of the dress very close to reality and to display the symbol of victory and endless energy by creating a flying mode in the wide wings of this statue.
